You could probably dig these hoses up in 50 years and they\u2019d still be mechanically sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Math Section: Calculating Flow &amp; Pressure Drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, grab your calculator. This is where some engineers get nervous about corrugated hoses.<br><em>\u201cBut doesn\u2019t the corrugation destroy my flow rate?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes and no. It creates turbulence. But turbulence actually aids heat transfer in some parts of the system, though mostly we are concerned with pressure drop (Delta P) in the transfer lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because WordPress doesn\u2019t like fancy LaTeX code, I\u2019m going to write these formulas out in text so you can copy-paste them into your engineering notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Friction Factor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a smooth tube, we use the Darcy-Weisbach equation. It depends on the pitch of the corrugation.<br>A rough rule of thumb we use at <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/teflonx.com\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teflon X<\/a><\/em><\/strong> for preliminary sizing: assume the pressure drop will be <strong>1.5x to 2.0x<\/strong> higher than a smooth tube of the same ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are running a high-flow system, you simply step up one size. If you calculated a 10mm smooth tube, use a 12mm or 14mm corrugated hose.
